Recruiting  Minority Fellowship Program

MILLER & CHEVALIER
MINORITY FELLOWSHIP

Miller & Chevalier is a Washington D.C. law firm that specializes in counseling and dispute resolution principally in the fields of tax; employee benefits; international trade and business; and government contracts, fraud, and white collar crime.  The Firm is strongly committed to enhancing the diversity of its workforce and has identified improving its diversity as a key strategic priority.  The Firm values the experiences that different individuals bring to the Firm and its clients, and it believes that a diverse environment works to everyone’s benefit.  The Firm’s goal is to create an environment that encourages all stakeholders to feel at home, to communicate openly and honestly about differences, and to have the opportunity to thrive.

Description:

The Miller & Chevalier Minority Fellowship will be awarded to one or two Fellows hired for the fall semester of 2008.  Fellows will work at the Firm on substantive legal matters (similar to summer associate projects) in one of the Firm’s three main practice areas.  Fellows will work approximately 15 hours per week, and will be paid at the rate of $50 per hour.

The purpose of the Fellowship is to supplement the Firm’s summer associate program by allowing additional minority students at local law schools an opportunity to work at Miller & Chevalier.  The Firm anticipates that Fellows whose work meets the Firm’s standards will be offered positions as summer associates or permanent associates.

Eligibility:

The Fellowships will be awarded on a competitive basis to one or two minority law school students.  Students from the following Washington, D.C. law schools are eligible for a Fellowship:  American University, Washington College of Law; Catholic University, Columbus School of Law; George Washington University Law School; Georgetown University Law Center; Howard University School of Law; and UDC David A. Clarke School of Law.  To be eligible, a candidate must:  (1) have completed the first year of law school (evening students are eligible); (2) have demonstrated academic excellence; (3) intend to practice in one of the firm’s practice areas following law school graduation; (4) intend to practice in Washington, D.C. following law school graduation; and (5) fall within the racial/ethnic categories set by the EEOC - i.e., Black, Hispanic, Asian, Pacific Islander, American Indian, or Alaskan Native.

Process:

The application process is described under Online Application.  Applications must be completed by April 11, 2008, to be considered.  The Firm will select Fellowship finalists from the pool of applicants, and these finalists will be interviewed by Firm attorneys.  After decisions are made, the Firm will inform all applicants of the status of their applications.
