C. Frederick Oliphant has over twenty-five years of experience in the tax and employee benefits area, during which he has consulted with Fortune 50 companies, pension plan funds, and professionals in private practice. A substantial part of his practice has focused on tax-qualified retirement plans, including defined benefit plans, 401(k) savings plans, ESOPs, and KSOPs. He has had broad experience in adapting these plans to reflect such corporate transactions as window benefit programs, joint ventures, mergers, spin-offs, and divestitures. His practice routinely involves representing clients before the Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Department of Labor.

Mr. Oliphant is often called on by clients to evaluate tax and ERISA issues relating to executive compensation arrangements, including stock option plans, restricted stock programs, unfunded deferred compensation programs, supplemental retirement programs, etc. He has also advised clients with respect to other employee benefits, including cafeteria plans, VEBAs, health plans, and life insurance programs. In related areas, Mr. Oliphant has over ten years experience with the legal issues associated with the use of so-called contingent workers, including independent contractors, leased employees, outsourced workers, and part-time, temporary, and casual laborers. In recent years, he has also focused on issues arising in connection with foreign pension plans and benefits for expatriates and foreign nationals.

Mr. Oliphant is an Editorial Advisor to the Journal of Pension Planning & Compliance.  He is consistently recognized for his work in the area of Employee Benefits in publications such as Best Lawyers in America and Who’s Who in American Law .  In July 2000, he was inducted as a Charter Fellow in the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel.

Mr. Oliphant was a staff member of the Journal of Law Reform at the University of Michigan Law School.  While attending the University of North Carolina, he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
